The Five Solas
Sola 5 of 5

Soli Deo Gloria

To God Alone Be the Glory

All of salvation — and all of life — exists for the glory of God alone.

For from him and through him and to him are all things. To him be glory forever. Amen.
Romans 11:36

The Gospel

Why did God create the world? For His glory. Why did God permit the fall? For His glory. Why does God save sinners? For His glory. The Gospel is not ultimately about us — it is about God displaying the infinite riches of His grace in Christ Jesus (Ephesians 2:7). We are saved so that we might be 'to the praise of his glorious grace' (Ephesians 1:6). This is the capstone of the Five Solas: everything exists for God's glory alone. Not for human achievement. Not for human comfort. Not for human entertainment. For the eternal, all-satisfying glory of the triune God.

What Does Soli Deo Gloria Mean?

Soli Deo Gloria is the Sola that puts all the others in their proper orbit. Scripture alone is our authority — because God's Word is how He reveals His glory. Faith alone is the instrument of salvation — because faith gives all credit to God, not to us. Grace alone is the basis — because grace means God gets all the glory for saving the undeserving. Christ alone is the mediator — because only in Christ is the fullness of God's glory revealed (Colossians 1:19).

The Reformers understood that the medieval system of merits, indulgences, and human mediators was fundamentally a glory-stealing enterprise. It redirected praise that belongs to God alone toward human beings and human institutions. Soli Deo Gloria was the Reformers' corrective: give God back His glory.

This principle extends far beyond Sunday worship. 'Whatever you do, do all to the glory of God' (1 Corinthians 10:31) means that every area of life — including the media we create, consume, and recommend — is meant to glorify the Creator.

Scripture Witnesses

So, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God.

1 Corinthians 10:31

Not to us, O LORD, not to us, but to your name give glory, for the sake of your steadfast love and your faithfulness!

Psalm 115:1

For my own sake, for my own sake, I do it, for how should my name be profaned? My glory I will not give to another.

Isaiah 48:11

Why It Matters

In a self-centered culture that worships human achievement, autonomy, and self-expression, Soli Deo Gloria reorients everything. It asks the most important question about any creative work: Who gets the glory?

The best media — even secular media — reflects something of God's glory, because all truth is God's truth and all beauty reflects His beauty. The worst media puts humanity at the center, celebrates rebellion against God, or treats His creation as if it has no Creator.

How It Shapes Our Scoring

This Sola undergirds our entire scoring philosophy. The Sola Score exists to help believers glorify God in their media choices. Our categories collectively assess whether a work of media directs attention toward God or toward idols. Does it celebrate human autonomy or acknowledge human dependence? Does it reflect the beauty and truth of the Creator? Does it, in the end, give glory where glory is due?

From the Reformed Confessions

Man's chief end is to glorify God, and to enjoy Him forever.
